Colombo, September 13, 2023 – India Vs Sri Lanka – India’s spin maestro Kuldeep Yadav put on a brilliant display as he claimed four crucial wickets to thwart Sri Lanka’s spirited fightback in the Asia Cup’s Super 4 clash on Tuesday. The result was a 41-run triumph for India, securing their spot in the tournament’s final and setting the stage for a virtual semi-final between Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
India faced a challenging task after being asked to bat first, with Sri Lanka’s left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage leading the attack, recording a career-best 5/40. The remaining four wickets were shared among off-spinner Charith Asalanka and Theekshana, forming an impressive bowling alliance.
Captain Rohit Sharma spearheaded India’s batting effort, amassing a commendable 53 from 48 balls. KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan also made valuable contributions, scoring 39 and 33 runs, respectively. Axar Patel added a crucial 26 runs towards the end of the innings at Asia Cup 2023 in Colombo.
Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir praised India’s performance, stating that the 41-run victory over Sri Lanka was more convincing than their previous 228-run win against Pakistan in the tournament. Gambhir emphasized the significance of successfully defending a modest total of 213 against Sri Lanka, a team renowned for its prowess against spin bowling.
Asia Cup 2023: Kuldeep Yadav India the strong force to win the Cup
India’s bowlers played a pivotal role in securing the win, with Kuldeep Yadav leading the charge with his impressive 4 for 43. After the Sri Lankan spin duo of Dunith Wellalage (5/40) and Charith Asalanka (4/18) posed significant challenges, India successfully bowled out Sri Lanka for 172.
“This victory for me was more convincing than Pakistan. We won against Pakistan by 228 runs, but this would give them a lot of confidence,” remarked Gautam Gambhir during an interview on Star Sports.
He further added, “There was no doubt about the batting unit. There were always doubts about Jasprit Bumrah coming back after an injury. Then you got Kuldeep and the other bowlers. But defending 213 on this wicket, plus the conditions. I know there was a bit of grip on the wicket, but it gripped more in the first innings.”
Meanwhile, in another riveting Asia Cup encounter, Virat Kohli continued his exceptional form by notching his 47th century in One-Day Internationals. Kohli reached this milestone in just 84 balls against Pakistan during the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup, where he also crossed the 13,000-run mark, becoming the fifth player to achieve this feat. Impressively, Kohli is the fastest player to reach the 13,000-run milestone.
This century marked Kohli’s fourth consecutive hundred in four innings in Colombo, where he has accumulated a remarkable 640 runs in 15 matches against Pakistan.
