India has made a big leap towards bridging the digital divide, a far-reaching Open Radio Access Network (ORAN) base station solution has been unveiled, promising high-speed and reliable connectivity at an economically viable cost, particularly for remote and underserved regions.

Developed by the IIITB COMET Foundation (COMET) in Bengaluru, this cutting-edge ORAN base station solution is poised to transform the telecommunications sector with its focus on spectral and energy efficiency, catering to the demands of 5G and 5G-Advanced radio networks.

ORAN technology, a critical component of next-generation telecommunications infrastructure, is set to revolutionize the industry by disaggregating software and hardware components, thereby lowering network costs and complexities. This approach not only eliminates vendor lock-in but also facilitates seamless interoperability between equipment from different providers, heralding a new era of innovation and competition in the telecom sector.

ORAN niche base station solutions by TIH to enable affordable connectivity for all

COMET, recognized as one of the premier Technology Innovation Hubs (TIH) established under the National Mission for Interdisciplinary Cyber Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), has emerged as a driving force in ORAN development. Collaborating with five leading academic institutions including IIIT Bangalore, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Bhilai, IIT Roorkee, and IIIT-Naya Raipur, COMET is at the forefront of ORAN innovation and implementation.

Led by Dr. Kiran Kuchi, a distinguished Professor at IIT Hyderabad, the development of ORAN base station radio units promises groundbreaking advancements in cell coverage and capacity. Leveraging a revolutionary technology utilizing multiple antennas on cell towers, this breakthrough is poised to enhance capacity by threefold compared to existing 4G networks, while optimizing spectrum utilization.

Prof. Debabrata Das, Director of IIIT Bangalore and Chairman of the Board of IIITB COMET Foundation, emphasized COMET’s commitment to driving ORAN innovation and fostering collaboration. He highlighted the foundation’s role in transforming cellular networks and nurturing skilled professionals through various skill development programs and workshops, thus ensuring a seamless transition into the 5G era.

Launch of 6G by 2030; ORAN Accelerates India’s Mission to lead the world

Looking ahead, with the commercial launch of 6G expected by 2030, India is actively engaged in exploring emerging standards, particularly in Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS), a technology anticipated to play a pivotal role in shaping the 6G standard. These initiatives underscore India’s aspirations to become a global leader in telecommunications, reinforcing self-reliance and aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a digitally empowered India.

The strides made in ORAN technology not only signify a significant leap towards inclusive connectivity but also position India as a frontrunner in defining global standards for future telecommunications technologies, solidifying its role as a key player in the global telecom landscape.
