April 19, 2024: India National Elections 2024: The first phase of this electoral marathon commenced today, April 19, 2024, spanning 102 seats across 21 states and Union Territories. While the voting percentage is crawling towards the 2019 mark, what is disheartening is the new voters are still not participating in the election to choose their leader at the center.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), spearheaded by Rahul Gandhi, lock horns in a battle of ideologies. Their rallies resemble rock concerts, with fervent supporters waving party flags and chanting slogans.

India’s diversity is its strength and Achilles’ heel. Caste, religion, and regional affiliations played a pivotal role. The Bihar caste calculus, the Tamil Nadu Dravidian pride, and the Assam citizenship conundrum shaped electoral narratives. Yet, amidst the cacophony of identities, a common thread emerged—the desire for progress, education, and healthcare.

The Battle for the Ballot

India National Elections 2024: Turnout Figures

  • Tripura: Leading the charge, Tripura boasts a commendable 68% voter turnout by 3 pm.
  • West Bengal: The battleground state records a robust 66% voting by 11 am.
  • Uttar Pradesh: Witnessing approximately 25% voting by the same hour.
  • Madhya Pradesh: Not far behind, Madhya Pradesh registers 30.46% voting by 11 am.
  • Jammu and Kashmir: Reports 22.60% voting by the same time.
  • Bihar: Records around 20.42% voting by 11 am1.

Historical Context

In the last general election, a staggering 612 million people out of a 912 million-strong electorate cast their votes, resulting in the highest-ever voter turnout of 67.4%2. This year, over 16.63 crore eligible voters are participating in the first phase, contributing to the democratic spectacle.

India National Elections 2024: The Political Landscape

NDA vs. INDIA Bloc

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeks a third successive term at the Centre.
The United Progressive Alliance (UPA), along with its allies, including the Congress, aims to stage a comeback after facing setbacks in the 2014 and 2019 elections.

As the first phase ends today and the second phase is on the anvil, India awaits the verdict. The counting of votes on June 4, 2024, will reveal the nation’s choice—a blend of aspirations, convictions, and dreams. The cacophony of campaign speeches will fade, replaced by the solemnity of democracy. India’s tryst with destiny continues, and the world watches—a witness to the grand theater of elections.
