September 30, 2024: Kangana Ranaut’s highly anticipated film Emergency is one step closer to release after the filmmakers agreed to cuts proposed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The decision comes after a controversy regarding the film’s portrayal of the Sikh community, which sparked objections from various groups, delaying the movie’s release.
The Bombay High Court was informed on Monday that Ranaut, who also serves as the director and co-producer of Emergency, has agreed to the edits recommended by the CBFC’s revising committee. The court hearing was triggered by a petition from Zee Studios, co-producer of the film, which sought the release of the film’s censor certificate.
Kangana Ranaut Emergency Film Controversy and Cuts
The film, originally slated for a September 6 release, has been embroiled in controversy, particularly after certain Sikh organizations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, accused the movie of misrepresenting their community. The CBFC responded by suggesting several cuts to ensure the film adhered to sensitivities surrounding the issue.
Advocate Abhinav Chandrachud, representing the CBFC, informed the court that the cuts involved minor changes, mostly related to dialogues. “The changes are essentially minor, involving words and phrasing, and won’t affect the film’s overall length or narrative,” he noted. Earlier reports suggested that up to 13 cuts had been recommended.
Advocate Sharan Jagtiani, representing the filmmakers, confirmed that the co-producers had discussed the changes and agreed to the necessary modifications, ensuring the film’s compliance with CBFC guidelines.
A Step Closer to Release
While the formalities surrounding the certification of Emergency are still underway, this agreement between the filmmakers and the CBFC marks significant progress. The Bombay High Court has adjourned the matter until Thursday to finalize the formalities.
The film, directed by and starring Kangana Ranaut, covers a crucial chapter in India’s political history and has been under close scrutiny since its announcement. With the recent developments, Emergency is now on track to clear its final hurdles before hitting theaters.
