Hyderabad, India | 18 December 2025: In a major step towards industrial decarbonization, AM Green and Japan’s Mitsui & Co. Ltd. have announced a partnership aimed at revolutionizing the aluminium industry. The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore opportunities in low-carbon aluminium production and joint investments in the sector. This collaboration is poised to accelerate AM Green’s goal of building the world’s first integrated green aluminium production platform.
AM Green, through its subsidiary AM Green Aluminium Metals and Materials (AM Green Metals), is constructing a cutting-edge 1 MTPA aluminium smelter and 2 MTPA alumina refining and mining operations. These projects are designed to run entirely on renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, and pumped hydro storage, making them among the cleanest aluminium production facilities in the world.
AM Green teams up with Mitsui for world’s first green aluminium platform
“We are excited to work with Mitsui to unlock the full potential of green aluminium,” said Mahesh Kolli, founder of Greenko Group and AM Green. “This partnership is a natural fit for both companies, as we share a commitment to reducing carbon emissions and driving the global energy transition. Together, we aim to scale up low-carbon aluminium production and expand access to green products globally.”
In November 2025, AM Green secured an MoU with the Andhra Pradesh (AP) government to establish a green aluminium complex in the region, reinforcing India’s growing role in the global green energy landscape. Additionally, AM Green has partnered with Coal India for a 4.5 GW renewable power supply to support its operations across multiple verticals, including the aluminium sector.
Under the new agreement with Mitsui, both companies will evaluate potential investments to support AM Green’s green aluminium value chain, including offtake agreements for low-carbon aluminium and the supply of auxiliary materials needed for the smelter and refinery. Mitsui’s involvement is expected to bolster AM Green’s capacity to build a truly sustainable and integrated green metals platform.
AM Green’s founders, Anil Chalamalasetty and Mahesh Kolli, have been at the helm of Greenko Group’s success in renewable energy, and now, with AM Green, they are expanding their focus to other key decarbonization technologies. AM Green holds stakes in Greenko’s Power2X businesses, which include green ammonia, green hydrogen, green metals, and green chemicals, among others. The company also has a significant presence in Bio2X businesses, such as 2G ethanol, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and lignin.
By 2030, AM Green aims to produce 5 MTPA of green ammonia (representing 20% of India’s green hydrogen production target) and 1 MTPA of green aluminium, making it a major player in the global low-carbon economy. Greenko’s renewable energy capacity, currently over 12 GW, is expanding rapidly, with plans to build 100 GWh of pumped hydro storage by 2030.
Mitsui & Co., with its global footprint in over 60 countries, is a major player in trading, investment, and business development. The company brings significant expertise and resources to help AM Green scale its green aluminium operations and expand its reach in international markets.
