September 4, 2024: After months of anticipation and a series of developer previews and public betas, Android 15 is officially here—but it’s not available for the general public just yet. As of today, Google has made the Android 15 source code available on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). However, the official rollout for consumers is still on the horizon.

Currently, only developers have access to the new OS version. Google’s latest September update for Pixel devices remains on Android 14, with Android 15 expected to land on Pixels, including the newly launched Pixel 9 series, in the coming weeks. Users with devices from brands like Samsung, Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Motorola, and others will receive the update in the upcoming months.

Android 15 Currently Available for Developers

Key Highlights of Android 15:

  • Developer Tools: Android 15 introduces several enhancements for developers. New features include the ApplicationStartInfo API for improved app startup analysis, advanced profiling capabilities, and enhanced PDF rendering APIs. The update also brings new Canvas drawing tools and SQLite API improvements.
  • Privacy and Security: Android 15 emphasizes privacy with features like a dedicated private space for sensitive apps and support for passkeys with single-tap sign-ins. Enhanced recording detection and stricter background activity controls are also part of this release.
  • Media and Camera Enhancements: Users can expect better media experiences with improved HDR and SDR content handling, advanced audio loudness controls, and Low Light Boost for enhanced image previews.
  • User Experience Improvements: The upcoming new features includes better multitasking features, such as the ability to save split-screen app combinations and more intuitive large-screen interactions. Accessibility improvements include support for Braille displays and expanded NFC capabilities.

Spotlight Weeks Series: Google is kicking off a new educational series called “Spotlight Weeks,” starting with a deep dive into Android 15. This series aims to provide developers with in-depth insights into the new OS features and improvements.

Looking Ahead: As developers start exploring the new android version, they are encouraged to prepare their apps for compatibility with the new platform. Google is also offering tools and guidance through the Android SDK Upgrade Assistant to facilitate a smooth transition.

Stay tuned to Google’s blog and official channels for ongoing updates and detailed coverage of Android 15’s features throughout Spotlight Weeks.
