Ignore the Culture, Lose the AI: Why 60% of Tech Strategies Could Crash by 2027
SHARE

September 22, 2026: By 2027, six out of ten organizations trying to roll out artificial intelligence (AI) could watch their plans fall completely flat. The culprit? It isn’t bad software or a lack of funding. It is workplace culture.

According to new insights from analyst firm Gartner, companies that ignore the human element of data management, the daily mindsets, habits, and workplace norms, are setting themselves up for failure in the age of AI.

Speaking at the Gartner Data & Analytics Summit in Mumbai, Anurag Raj, Director Analyst at Gartner, pointed out a massive flaw in how most companies approach technology: they spend all their time building rigid policies and buying expensive software, but completely forget about the people expected to use them.

“AI has amplified the importance of getting data governance foundations right,” Raj said. “Data governance without a focus on a data-driven culture is an effort in vain.”

The data backs it up. In a March survey of over 200 tech leaders, Gartner found that cultural pushback was the single biggest reason governance projects flopped, outranking budget shortages by 60% to 40%. When employees don’t understand why clean data matters, or when business teams treat data management as “just an IT problem,” the whole system breaks down.

The takeaway is clear: having AI-ready data means nothing if you don’t have AI-ready people.

To avoid the 2027 slump, companies need to stop treating data governance as an isolated tech chore. Instead, leaders need to weave data literacy, AI training, and clear accountability into everyday workflows. When trust in data becomes a shared habit across every department rather than a forced rule from IT, AI actually works.

Ultimately, the future of AI is not just a technical race, it is a human one.
