Hyderabad, January 12, 2026: AM Green Ammonia India Private Limited on Sunday signed a long-term, binding offtake agreement with Germany’s Uniper Global Commodities SE to supply up to 500,000 tonnes per year of renewable ammonia to Europe, marking a first-of-its-kind deal for an Indian producer and a significant step in India’s green hydrogen export ambitions.

Under the agreement, Uniper will offtake renewable ammonia certified as a Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) from AM Green’s green ammonia projects in India. The first shipments are expected to begin in 2028 from the company’s 1 million tonnes per annum plant under construction at Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh.

AM Green , Uniper Deal supports India–Europe clean energy trade

The agreement was exchanged between AM Green Founder and Group Chairman Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty and Uniper CEO Michael Lewis, CBE, in the presence of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an event in Ahmedabad, highlighting the strategic importance of the partnership for both countries.

AM Green said the deal supports India’s National Hydrogen Mission and strengthens the country’s position as a potential global supplier of green hydrogen and green ammonia. The company is developing a portfolio of green ammonia plants at Kakinada, Tuticorin and Kandla, backed by investors Gentari, GIC and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.

“This partnership is a milestone for India’s role in the global energy transition,” Chalamalasetty said, adding that AM Green’s renewable ammonia is designed to meet Europe’s RFNBO compliance requirements through firm and dispatchable clean electricity solutions.

Uniper said the agreement advances its strategy to secure long-term access to renewable and low-carbon molecules for European industrial customers. Lewis said green ammonia would play a key role in decarbonising sectors such as chemicals, fertilisers and refining, while also helping establish one of the first large-scale renewable energy supply corridors between India and Europe.

AM Green’s Kakinada project reached Final Investment Decision in 2024 and is among a limited number of large-scale RFNBO-compliant green ammonia plants currently under construction globally. Once fully operational, the project is expected to create more than 600 local jobs and help avoid nearly 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Michael Lewis, CEO of Uniper, said the agreement would help secure reliable access to renewable and low-carbon molecules for European industry and support the decarbonisation of chemicals, fertilisers and refining, while laying the foundation for one of the first large-scale green energy supply corridors between India and Europe.

Mahesh Kolli, Co-Founder of AM Green, said the deal shows that low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia can now be delivered at scale and competitive prices from India.”

Uniper and AM Green said they will continue to work with certification bodies to ensure traceability and compliance for European end-users as demand for renewable fuels accelerates across the region.
