Mumbai, April 22, 2025: The box office scoreboard for Monday tells a mixed tale: one clear winner, and three struggling contenders. While Sunny Deol’s rural action drama ‘Jaat’ surged past the ₹100 crore mark globally, films like ‘Kesari 2’, ‘Good Bad Ugly’, and ‘Odela 2’ stumbled through the start of the workweek.

In an industry increasingly reliant on front-loaded weekends, Monday has become the new metric for staying power — and this week, only one film passed the test.

Sunny Deol’s ‘Jaat’ might not have exploded at the box office daily, but its slow-burn strategy has paid off. The film’s Monday earnings stood at ₹2 crore, modest but enough to push its worldwide total past ₹100 crore. In India alone, it has raked in over ₹76 crore — a strong performance for a film without massive pre-release hype.

Deol’s gritty screen presence and the film’s mass appeal among rural audiences seem to be the driving force behind its quiet but confident box office march.

Despite an impressive Sunday haul of ₹12 crore, Akshay Kumar’s ‘Kesari: Chapter 2’ dropped dramatically on Monday, collecting only ₹4.5 crore. The film’s total now stands at ₹34 crore, but the sharp fall — over 60% compared to Sunday — suggests that buzz is waning fast.

Directed by Karan Singh Tyagi and inspired by The Case That Shook the Empire, the film’s courtroom-historical setting may not be resonating enough with weekday audiences looking for lighter, fast-paced entertainment.

Ajith Kumar’s high-octane Tamil flick ‘Good Bad Ugly’ was expected to dominate for weeks. But Monday brought no momentum. The film added just ₹2 crore, bringing its total earnings to ₹139.70 crore. Though still a commercial success, the film seems to be losing steam faster than expected in its second week.

Tamannaah Bhatia-led mythological thriller ‘Odela 2’ failed to ignite interest from the start, and Monday’s earnings of just ₹38 lakh all but sealed its fate. With a total collection of ₹3.78 crore, the film is likely headed for an early digital release.

What This Week’s Numbers Tell Us – From Kesari 2 to Odela 2 to Jaat

The post-holiday Monday paints a clear picture: weekend hype is not enough. Audiences are increasingly selective, rewarding emotionally resonant and mass-appeal stories over star-led prestige projects. While ‘Jaat’ continues to gain quietly, the rest of the slate underscores the importance of word-of-mouth and weekday traction.
