August 2, 2024: Paris, France – August 2, 2024 – In a surprising turn of events at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Carissa Moore, the defending gold medalist in women’s surfing, was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Moore, a dominant force in surfing and widely regarded as one of the sport’s greatest athletes, faced a tough challenge from Johanne Defay of France in heat #2 of the Women’s quarterfinals.

Moore’s defeat came as a shock to many, especially as the surfer, who recently retired from the World Tour, was expected to make a strong bid for her second Olympic gold. The speculations surrounding this Olympics potentially marking the end of Moore’s illustrious competitive career have now intensified following her early exit in Tahiti.

In a display of exceptional skill and strategy, Defay surged ahead from the start, earning the two highest-scoring waves of the heat with a 5.67 and a 4.67. Her performance was marked by a series of powerful backside maneuvers that effectively harnessed the challenging wave conditions. Despite a strong effort from Moore, who scored 6.50, Defay’s consistent and commanding performance saw her advance to the semi-finals.

The conditions at the surf venue added to the challenge, with a sideshore wind creating choppy waves that made it difficult for competitors to find their rhythm. Moore, known for her resilience, made a valiant effort in the final moments, nearly pulling off a dramatic barrel ride. Her last-minute attempt almost turned the tide, but she was unable to secure the necessary score to overcome Defay.

Defay, with a total score of 10.34, will now face Caroline Marks of Team USA in the semi-finals, as the surfing competition at Paris 2024 continues to captivate audiences at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
