August 7, 2024: Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, Chief Medical Officer of the Indian Contingent, provided an in-depth explanation regarding the disqualification of wrestler Vinesh Phogat. Phogat, who was competing in the semi-finals, was disqualified due to exceeding the weight limit by 2.7 kg.
Dr. Pardiwala explained that following the semi-finals, Phogat’s weight was found to be above the allowed limit. “The team immediately initiated the standard weight reduction process, which includes limiting water intake and food, alongside intensive sweating techniques,” he said. However, the team was constrained by time, with only 12 hours to meet the weight requirement.
The medical staff employed various methods to help Vinesh Phogat shed the excess weight, including steam and sauna sessions, vigorous exercise, and even some drastic measures such as cutting her hair. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to reduce her weight by the final 100 grams needed within the available time frame.
Upon disqualification, the priority shifted to ensuring Vinesh Phogat‘s recovery and rehydration. “We administered intravenous fluids to rehydrate her, and she began consuming food and drink,” Dr. Pardiwala noted. He assured that Phogat is now in good physical and medical condition, with precautionary blood tests showing normal results.
This detailed account provides insight into the challenging circumstances faced by the medical team and highlights the rigorous efforts made to support Phogat under intense time constraints.
The question, how did she gain weight in the first place? and it was only challenged at the penultimate stage.
