Today the world is commemorating “World Population Day 2023”. This day was established on July 11 each year in order to recognize and solve the distinct challenge posed by a growing global population.

The rapid increase in the world’s population has created a host of problems and challenges for humanity. Population growth has a significant impact on the general public’s levels of poverty, economic problems, and maternal health.

World Population Day is an opportunity to confront these problems and work toward a more inclusive society. The annual commemoration hopes to raise awareness of problems and educate people about the world’s population and the challenges it faces.

Theme for World Population Day 2023

The topic for World Population Day in 2023 has been selected by the UN as “Unleashing the power of gender equality: Uplifting the voices of women and girls to unlock our world’s infinite possibilities.”

They make up 49.7% of the global population, yet women and girls are often ignored in discussions on demographics, with their rights violated in population policies.

This pervasive injustice keeps women and girls out of school, the workforce and leadership positions; limits their agency and ability to make decisions about their health and sexual and reproductive lives; and heightens their vulnerability to violence, harmful practices and preventable maternal death, with a woman dying every two minutes due to pregnancy or childbirth.

We must advance gender equality to create a more just, resilient and sustainable world. The creativity, ingenuity, resources and power of women and girls are fundamental to addressing demographic and other challenges that threaten our future, including climate change and conflict- UNited nations message

Following a suggestion made by Dr. KC Zachariah on the eve of the world population passing five billion on July 11, 1987, the United Nations established World Population Day in 1989.

On July 11, 1990, more than 90 countries celebrated the first World Population Day. Since then, numerous UNFPA country offices, as well as diverse groups and institutions, have observed this day in conjunction with governments and civil societies.

2023 World Population Day: Importance

The purpose of Population Day is to highlight the key issues related to global population. It clarifies how the problems faced by women, economic crises, and poverty are all made worse by the exponential population growth.

The day serves as a reminder to take proactive steps to improve people’s lives and forge a better future. The United Nations celebrates this day with a steadfast commitment to creating a world in which everyone has a bright future full of opportunity. Additionally, it supports the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals’ objective of a sustainable future for all people.

By raising awareness and understanding of the world’s population, World Population Day inspires people and organizations to take constructive action. Additionally, it offers a special chance to promote themes like gender equality, women’s empowerment, and their contribution to the creation of a better society.
