Star cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have expressed their new desire in 2024. They have reportedly made themselves available for selection for the upcoming T20 series against Afghanistan. Both players, absent from T20 Internationals since the 2022 World Cup, are potentially poised for a return to the shortest format of the game.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee is set to convene to finalize the squad for the T20I series against Afghanistan. The conclusion of the Test series between India and South Africa has provided a window for the selection committee to deliberate and announce the squad, expected to occur today.

According to a report in the Indian Express, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are eager to re-enter T20 cricket, eyeing the T20 World Cup scheduled for next year. Their absence since the 2022 T20 World Cup, where they last appeared in a T20 international, has allowed emerging talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, and Ishan Kishan to shine in the format.

The return of Virat Kohli and Sharma in the T20I format could mark a strategic shift as India prepares for the upcoming T20 World Cup, serving as a pivotal opportunity to refine the squad.

However, the report indicates that the pace duo of Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah may be rested following their involvement in the recent South Africa series. Mohammed Shami’s availability remains uncertain after his absence in the South Africa Tests.

Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, grappling with injuries, continue to remain sidelined. Pandya has been out of action since the ODI World Cup 2023, while Yadav sustained an injury during the South Africa tour, with his return anticipated next month.

Apart from the Afghanistan series squad announcement, the BCCI is also expected to reveal the roster for the first two Tests against England, adding to the anticipation within the cricketing circles.
