The menace of deepfakes has hit Solana Co-Founder. This has cast a shadow over the landscape of social media, infiltrating even the resilient grounds of the cryptocurrency sector. In a disconcerting turn, a deepfake video featuring Anatoly Yakovenko, the co-founder of Solana, surfaced across various social media platforms.
This fraudulent video propagated on platforms like YouTube and X, enticing users with a deceptive giveaway, potentially posing a scam that threatens members of the crypto industry.
Deepfakes, manipulative videos crafted through digital software and face-swapping technology, have become a tool for misleading individuals. Within the fabricated video impersonating Yakovenko, an artificial avatar resembling the Solana co-founder initially extended gratitude to the SOL community.
Deepfakes, beware of manipulations
The deepfake video then led viewers to participate in a bogus giveaway through a QR code displayed on screen, accompanied by a related website. The manipulation was flagged by vigilant members of the community, cautioning against falling prey to the scam, as highlighted in a tweet shared on December 30, 2023.
The Solana team promptly reported the incident to law enforcement, although acknowledging their inability to directly eliminate the video circulating online, as reported by The Verge, citing Austin Federa, the head of strategy at the Solana Foundation.
Furthermore, Nicole Bell, a spokesperson for YouTube, confirmed the termination of the associated account hosting the fraudulent video, in a bid to curb its dissemination.
A recent report by Samsub underscored the escalating threat posed by deepfakes within the crypto industry. The report revealed that 70% of companies within the sector acknowledged the rising use of deepfakes by fraudsters. Comparing the statistics from 2023 to 2022, the report noted a staggering 128% increase in the presence of deepfakes within the crypto space.
Despite the concerted efforts by the Solana Foundation and other entities to address the issue, Federa emphasized the need for major tech platforms like YouTube and X to swiftly tackle such deceptive videos to safeguard users from falling victim to scams.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the evolving landscape of cyber threats and the necessity for robust measures to counter the proliferation of deepfake-based scams targeting individuals within the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
