December 20, 2024: Rifle Club, directed by Aashiq Abu, hit theatres on December 19, and it’s already creating waves across social media platforms like X, garnering praise for its gripping storyline, stellar performances, and high-octane action sequences.

Starring an ensemble cast including Vijayaraghavan, Dileesh Pothan, Vani Viswanath, Anurag Kashyap, and rapper-singer Hanumankind, the film is being hailed as a refreshing take on survival dramas.

The Plot – A Tale of Honour and Mayhem

Set against the backdrop of the Western Ghats in Wayanad, Rifle Club immerses the audience into a closed, secretive world governed by an unspoken code of honour. The plot revolves around a rifle club that is the epicenter of the local hunting community. Dead wild boars, gun-toting individuals, and a dangerous blend of family ties and rivalries characterize this world.

Enter Shahjahan (Vineeth Kumar), a film star trying to reinvent his image by immersing himself in the world of hunting, inspired by the popularity of Mrigaya. Little does he know, the night he chooses to spend at the Rifle Club becomes the backdrop for a deadly clash with a group of uninvited visitors, led by the menacing arms dealer Dayanand (Anurag Kashyap).

What follows is a cat-and-mouse game, with the fate of the club’s residents hanging in the balance. Aashiq Abu’s direction ensures that the stakes are high, and the action-packed sequences keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

Rifle Club Performances and Screenplay – A Stellar Ensemble Cast

The film shines through its performances, with a cast that elevates the material. Dileesh Pothan’s portrayal of the club secretary Avaran is both hilarious and menacing, while Hanumankind’s performance as the sharp-shooter Bheera is chilling. Anurag Kashyap, playing the antagonist Dayanand, delivers an unforgettable performance, full of tension and dark charisma.

The screenplay, penned by Shyam Pushkaran, Dileesh Karunakaran, and Suhas, is a masterclass in pacing. While the film has a relatively straightforward premise, the real power lies in the script’s ability to juggle parallel storylines and keep the tension simmering. The witty dialogue, especially the banter between Dayanand and Avaran, adds a layer of comedy to an otherwise intense film.

However, while the film excels in its character building and sharp dialogues, some may feel the finale falls short of the expected “wow” factor. The face-off between the two gangs in the pre-climax is exhilarating, but the final resolution could have used a bit more refinement to land with the punch the movie deserves.

A Cinematic Treat – Stunning Cinematography and Music

Aashiq Abu, also taking on the role of cinematographer, brings a unique visual style to Rifle Club. The lush landscapes of Wayanad provide a stunning contrast to the tension-filled moments inside the rifle club. The film’s cinematography is complemented by Rex Vijayan’s atmospheric music, which enhances the mood of the film. Action sequences, especially those featuring a sharpshooter on a motorcycle, are shot with finesse, ensuring the film remains visually captivating throughout.

Rifle Club Review: A Feast for Fans of Stylish Thrillers

Rifle Club brings together elements of survival drama, action, and dark humor in a stylish package. Though it lacks a certain depth in its core, the engaging characters, slick action choreography, and gripping performances make it an entertaining watch. The film strikes a balance between intense moments and humor, maintaining its appeal with seamless pacing and an ensemble cast that delivers.

For fans of Aashiq Abu’s earlier work, Rifle Club marks a return to form. It’s a quirky action entertainer with a mix of mass appeal and thoughtful character exploration, making it a must-watch for anyone looking for an adrenaline rush in a survival drama.

Rifle Club Review in Short

Rifle Club might not reinvent the genre, but it offers a stylish, action-packed ride with memorable performances and a script that keeps the audience engaged. If you’re in the mood for a thriller with sharp wit, solid action, and a unique take on survival, this film should be at the top of your list.
