Bhai Dooj 2023; Make it special this year with lasting bond
SHARE

As the radiant festival of Diwali concludes, it paves the way for the heartwarming celebration of Bhai Dooj 2023. Rooted in the profound bond between brothers and sisters, this unique occasion holds a special place in the hearts of families across the nation.

Sisters adorn their brothers’ foreheads with the sacred tilak, accompanied by heartfelt prayers for their well-being. In return, brothers express their love and gratitude through thoughtful gifts, symbolizing the essence of familial ties.

Bhai Dooj 2023: Shubh Muhurat and Dates

In the calendar of festivities, Bhai Dooj graces us on the second day of Shukla Paksha in the Kartik month. This year, the auspicious occasion unfolds on November 15, 2023, aligning with the Shukla Dwitiya Tithi. The celebrations commence at 2:36 p.m. on November 14 and conclude at 1:47 p.m. on November 15, according to Udaya Tithi.

Unraveling the Significance of Bhai Dooj 2023

Delving into the festival’s origins, Bhai Dooj carries timeless tales of sibling love. One such narrative recounts the visit of Yamaraj, the deity of death, to his sister Yami. In a display of affection, Yami applied a tilak to her brother’s forehead, an act that symbolizes the enduring bond between brothers and sisters. This tradition, steeped in love, has transcended through generations.

Another legend intertwines Bhai Dooj with the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura. Lord Krishna’s sister, Subhadra, welcomed him with a tilak, immortalizing the day as Bhai Dooj.

Bhai Dooj 2023: Dont Miss the Rituals and Customs: Applying Tilak with Devotion

As families prepare for Bhai Dooj, it is essential to honor the roots of the celebration. Both brothers and sisters are encouraged to worship Yamraj and Yami, invoking blessings for a harmonious life. During the tilak ceremony, sisters fervently pray for the well-being and longevity of their brothers.

A unique aspect to keep in mind is the orientation during tilak application. Brothers should face north or north-west, while sisters should position themselves towards the north-east or east. Sisters may choose to fast before the tilak ceremony, breaking their fast only after completing the ritual.

Post-tilak, the sweetness of the occasion extends to sharing delectable sweets, symbolizing the sweetness of the sibling bond. In cases where physical distance prevails, sisters can send the tilak and a dry coconut to their brothers.

The Coconut Tradition: A Symbol of Enduring Love

A distinctive feature of Bhai Dooj is the gifting of coconut shells by sisters to their brothers. Legend has it that when Yamraj first visited Yamuna’s abode on this day, she presented him with a coconut shell, marking the inception of this heartfelt tradition.

In the spirit of reciprocity, brothers express their love by presenting thoughtful gifts to their sisters, creating lasting memories and strengthening the bond that Bhai Dooj so beautifully celebrates.

As Bhai Dooj 2023 unfolds, let the sacred tilak and exchanged gifts echo the enduring love between siblings, fostering joy and unity in every household.
