NEW DELHI, January 27, 2026: In a move that effectively redrafts the geopolitical map for the next decade, India and the European Union have successfully concluded negotiations for a massive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) alongside a suite of 13 landmark agreements.
The breakthroughs came during the 16th India-EU Summit today, following the high-profile visit of European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who served as Chief Guests for India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations.
The ‘Mother of All Deals’ Anchors a Global Strategic Pivot

The centerpiece of the summit, the conclusion of the India-EU FTA negotiations, marks the end of an 18-year wait. Described by European leaders as the “mother of all deals,” the agreement is set to create a combined market of two billion people.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the pact as a “blueprint for shared prosperity,” emphasizing its role in strengthening resilient supply chains and economic security.
Beyond pure commerce, the two sides adopted the “Towards 2030” Strategic Agenda. This framework upgrades the partnership to handle everything from financial market integration, via a new MoU between the RBI and ESMA, to the interoperability of advanced electronic signatures.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his X Post said – Today is a day that will be remembered forever, marked indelibly in our shared history. European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and I are delighted to announce the conclusion of the historic India-EU Free Trade Agreement.
A New Era of Security, Mobility, and Green Innovation
The summit also delivered a historic “Security and Defence Partnership,” making India only the third Asian nation to enter such an arrangement with the EU. This deal establishes a structured annual dialogue on maritime security and cyber threats, bolstered by a fresh commitment to share classified information.
On the human capital front, the launch of a pilot “Legal Gateway Office” in India is set to revolutionize skill mobility. This office will serve as a one-stop hub for Indian professionals seeking opportunities across the European Union.
Sustainability remained a top priority with the constitution of a Green Hydrogen Task Force and a 2030 renewal of scientific cooperation. These initiatives ensure the two giants lead the charge in industrial decarbonization and climate-resilient agriculture across the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
