March 29, 2025: A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025, leaving widespread destruction and loss of life in its wake. The epicenter, located near Mandalay, triggered tremors that were felt across Southeast Asia, including Thailand, India, and China. The disaster has claimed over 694 lives, with the death toll expected to rise as rescue operations continue. Myanmar has also experienced 14 aftershocks since the initial quake, further complicating relief efforts.

Southeast Asia Trembles: Myanmar and Thailand in Crisis

In Myanmar, the earthquake caused the collapse of key structures, including the historic Ava Bridge and several residential buildings. Survivors have shared harrowing accounts of being trapped under debris, with many still searching for missing family members. The quake also impacted Thailand, where Bangkok declared a state of emergency following the collapse of an under-construction high-rise building, leaving over 100 workers missing. Tremors were felt as far as Kolkata, India, and Dhaka, Bangladesh, causing panic among residents.

India has stepped forward as a first responder to assist Myanmar in its time of need. Under “Operation Brahma,” the Indian government dispatched 15 tonnes of relief supplies, including food packets, kitchen sets, solar lamps, tents, sleeping bags, hygiene kits, and essential medicines. An Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft carried the supplies from Hindon Air Force Station to Myanmar. Additionally, India has sent search and rescue teams and medical personnel to aid in relief efforts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern over the disaster and pledged India’s unwavering support to Myanmar and Thailand.

The Indian Embassy in Myanmar is working closely with local authorities to ensure the swift delivery of aid. Emergency contact numbers have been provided for Indian nationals in the affected regions, and the embassy is monitoring the situation closely. Meanwhile, international organizations like UNICEF and the World Health Organization have also mobilized resources to assist the victims.

As Myanmar and Thailand grapple with the aftermath of the earthquake, the focus remains on saving lives, providing relief to survivors, and rebuilding the affected areas. The disaster highlights the importance of regional cooperation and preparedness in responding to natural calamities.
