November 21, 2024: In a significant step toward creating equal opportunities for young innovators, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launched the VISION Portal (Viksit Bharat Initiative for Student Innovation and Outreach Network). The initiative is designed to empower underprivileged students with skills, education, and innovation opportunities, providing a pathway to thrive in India’s booming startup ecosystem.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Singh highlighted how the VISION Portal aims to bridge the gap between untapped talent and access to resources. “This initiative ensures that even the most underprivileged students can connect with India’s innovation landscape. It’s about unlocking their potential and giving them the tools to succeed,” he said.
A Growing Startup Nation
Dr. Singh pointed to India’s transformation into the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem, growing from 400 startups in 2014 to over 1.67 lakh today. He credited this success to forward-thinking policies introduced under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, which have created an enabling environment for innovation and entrepreneurship.
“India never lacked talent. What we needed was an ecosystem that nurtured ideas and gave individuals the freedom to innovate,” Dr. Singh remarked.
Innovation Beyond Urban Centers
The Minister emphasized that startups are thriving in sectors beyond IT, such as agriculture, biotechnology, and space technology. He cited lavender farming startups in Jammu and Kashmir as an example of how innovation is transforming local economies and creating jobs.
Biotechnology was another focus of Dr. Singh’s address. With India’s biotech startups surging from 50 in 2014 to nearly 9,000 today, he lauded the recent Bio-E3 policy for its role in advancing biotechnology while fostering economic growth and sustainability.
“The next industrial revolution will be driven by bio-economy, just as IT defined the 1990s,” he said, emphasizing India’s leadership potential in this domain.
Empowering Through Technology and Education
The VISION Portal also underscores the role of technology in breaking barriers for students in remote areas. Dr. Singh shared inspiring stories of students who cracked competitive exams like IITs and Civil Services using only smartphones, demonstrating how technology can transform lives.
He further praised the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 for enabling students to explore interdisciplinary studies and unconventional careers. “This flexibility liberates creativity and prepares the youth for a future that values innovation,” Dr. Singh said.
Building an Inclusive Future
Public-private partnerships and industry linkages are critical for sustainability in the startup space, Dr. Singh noted. He highlighted the success of India’s first private rocket manufacturing startup, which recently established operations in Hyderabad, as a testament to the power of collaboration.
Concluding his address, Dr. Singh expressed optimism about the VISION Portal’s ability to contribute to Vision India 2047, the roadmap for making India a global leader in technology, education, and economic growth.
“VISION Portal empowers students to thrive in startups, fuels innovation, and ensures no talent is left behind. This is a step toward an inclusive and brighter future for our youth,” he said.
