June 6, 2024: Google has introduced a suite of new features to its AI research and writing assistant, NotebookLM. The upgraded tool, now powered by Google’s advanced Gemini 1.5 Pro model, is set to be available across 200 countries and territories worldwide.
“Our goal from the beginning with NotebookLM has been to create a tool to help you understand and explore complex material, make new connections from information, and get to your first draft faster. You can upload sources — your research notes, interview transcripts, corporate documents — and instantly NotebookLM becomes an expert in the material that matters most to you,” explained Steven Johnson and Raiza Martin from Google Labs in a blog post announcing the upgrades.
The latest enhancements to NotebookLM include support for Google Slides and web URLs as sources, in addition to the existing support for Google Docs, PDFs, and text files. This expansion allows users to integrate a wider range of materials into their research. Moreover, the tool now offers improved inline citations, directing users to specific passages in their sources, which simplifies fact-checking and deeper exploration of the original text.

A notable feature of the upgraded NotebookLM is the Notebook Guide, which provides a high-level overview of sources by converting them into practical formats such as FAQs, Briefing Documents, or Study Guides. Leveraging the multimodal capabilities of Gemini 1.5 Pro, users can now ask questions about images, charts, and diagrams in their Slides or Docs, with NotebookLM providing relevant citations for images as supporting evidence.
Regarding the accuracy and reliability of citations, Raiza Martin emphasized that NotebookLM generates citations for all its answers, ensuring that every piece of information provided is traceable to the sources uploaded by users.
For those unfamiliar with NotebookLM, this AI-powered note-taking app can summarize, explain, and generate content from user documents. Initially known as Project Tailwind, NotebookLM organizes and summarizes rough notes, aiding users in their research efforts. Unique to NotebookLM is its ability to be trained on a user’s documents, allowing for personalized and relevant AI-generated responses.
The blog post from Google executives highlighted various success stories from early adopters who have integrated NotebookLM into their research and writing workflows. Developed in collaboration with authors, students, and educators, the tool has been praised for its versatility and effectiveness.
New users can easily get started with NotebookLM by creating a notebook and uploading documents for a specific project. The tool then allows users to read, take notes, and generate automatic overviews of their sources, such as study guides or tables of contents.
Whether it’s for building imaginary worlds, writing best-selling biographies, or helping salespeople discover new clients, NotebookLM provides powerful tools to generate insights from large collections of documents.
