August 15, 2026: What happens when a superstar known for action, intensity and larger than life roles decides to simply be a person? Vishwanath and Sons has an interesting answer.

Directed by Venky Atluri, the family drama puts Suriya in the role of Sanjay Vishwanath, a wealthy businessman in his 40s who has built a comfortable life around one firm decision: marriage is not for him.

Sanjay is successful, independent and perfectly happy with his choices. His mother Nirmala Devi, played by Radikaa Sarathkumar, however, remains determined to change his mind. Then life throws him a surprise.

Sanjay returns home with a baby boy and suddenly finds himself navigating fatherhood, family expectations and a relationship he never planned for. Enter Maddy, played by Mamitha Baiju, a young woman whose presence gradually changes the rhythm of his carefully controlled world.

This is where the film finds its charm. Suriya does not need elaborate hero moments to make Sanjay watchable. There are no grand action sequences or dramatic entrances built around his image. Instead, the actor works through conversations, expressions and small reactions. He plays Sanjay as a man who is confident in business and considerably less certain when it comes to matters of the heart.

That restraint suits him beautifully. His scenes with Radikaa Sarathkumar have an easy familiarity, while his interactions with Mamitha Baiju bring much of the film’s humour and freshness. It is a performance that relies more on personality than performance.

Mamitha Baiju gives Maddy an appealing mix of confidence, vulnerability and spontaneity. She could easily have become a familiar quirky character in a film like this. Instead, she gives Maddy enough emotional depth to make her feel grounded.

Her chemistry with Suriya is one of the film’s biggest strengths. Their exchanges are often funny without feeling forced, and their relationship develops with a natural ease. Radikaa Sarathkumar is equally effective as Nirmala Devi, bringing warmth and personality to the family portions.

The film is at its most enjoyable in the first half. The family dynamics work, the comedy arrives naturally and the arrival of the baby gives the story an extra dose of warmth.

There is a pleasant rhythm to these portions. The film understands that family entertainment works best when characters are allowed to interact rather than constantly explain their emotions.

The second half struggles to maintain that rhythm. The comedy takes a back seat and the emotional drama becomes increasingly stretched. Several developments become easier to anticipate, taking away some of the surprise that made the first half engaging.

The film has enough material for a strong family drama. The screenplay simply does not always know when to move on from a moment.

One of its more interesting choices is the decision to look beyond the central relationship. The story touches upon family expectations, parenthood, respect for parents, the role of farmers and the idea that financial success alone cannot define a meaningful life.

The age difference between Sanjay and Maddy is also handled with relative maturity. The film gives both characters agency and allows the relationship to develop without making the age gap the sole source of conflict.

The biggest weakness remains the screenplay. There are several individual scenes that work beautifully. Put together, however, they do not always form a smooth narrative. The emotional portions could have benefited from tighter editing and greater restraint.

Raveena Tandon’s track also feels less developed compared with the central characters, making that portion of the story feel somewhat disconnected.

Still, Vishwanath and Sons has genuine warmth and some very likeable performances.

Suriya is the biggest reason to stay with it. He brings an effortless charm to Sanjay and proves that he can command the screen without action sequences or larger than life moments. Mamitha Baiju gives the film its youthful energy, while Radikaa Sarathkumar adds considerable warmth to the family portions.

The first half is breezy, funny and engaging. The second half becomes heavier and more predictable, keeping the film from reaching its full potential.

Yet there is something comforting about a mainstream film that chooses relationships over spectacle.

Vishwanath and Sons may stumble along the way, though its heart remains firmly in the right place.
