March 5: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia — In a high-stakes clash at the Hazza bin Zayed Stadium, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr faced off against Al Ain in the first leg of the AFC Champions League quarterfinals. The match promised excitement, but it was Al Ain who emerged victorious, securing a narrow 1-0 win.

Rahimi’s Strike Puts Al Ain Ahead

Moroccan forward Soufiane Rahimi proved to be the difference-maker, netting the decisive goal for Al Ain in the first half. His well-placed shot left Al Nassr goalkeeper Khalid Essa with no chance, sending the home crowd into raptures.

Ronaldo’s Frustrating Night

Despite his return from suspension, Cristiano Ronaldo endured a frustrating evening. The Portuguese superstar, donning the Al Nassr jersey, couldn’t find the back of the net. Al Ain’s goalkeeper, Khalid Essa, denied Ronaldo’s attempts with acrobatic saves, leaving the five-time Ballon d’Or winner visibly frustrated.

Laporte’s Red Card Adds to Al Nassr’s Woes

The match took an unfortunate turn for Al Nassr when their center-back, Aymeric Laporte, received a red card. Laporte’s shove on Al Ain’s right-back, Bandar Al-Ahbabi, resulted in his dismissal. Al Nassr played the final minutes with ten men, making their uphill battle even tougher.

Second-Leg Showdown

With the first-leg advantage in their favor, Al Ain heads to Riyadh for the return fixture. Al Nassr, led by Ronaldo, will be determined to overturn the deficit and secure a spot in the semifinals. The second leg is scheduled for March 12, 2024, at 1:30 AM IST
