Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill put up a solid 124-run opening partnership to give India’s innings a strong start in the first one-day international (ODI) between India and New Zealand.
While Devon Conway made a good catch, Gill (50 off 65 balls) was Lockie Ferguson’s first victim. The next player to abandon the game was Dhawan, who had a score of 72 off of 77 balls. The catch was made by Finn Allen, and Tim Southee took the Indian captain’s wicket.
Kane Williamson, the captain of New Zealand, made the decision to bowl first after winning the toss in the first ODI match against India at Eden Park. Williamson returns to the New Zealand team after missing the third Twenty20 match on November 22 owing to a prearranged medical appointment. India prevailed 1-0 to take the series.
India chose two rookies for their young starting lineup. Both left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh and right-arm fast bowler Umran Malik will play in their first ODI. Tim Southee, Matt Henry, Adam Milne, and Lockie Ferguson are the four seam bowlers that New Zealand has chosen. The spin option is provided by all-around player Mitchell Santner.
Both nations are starting to anticipate the ODI World Cup in India, which is just a year away, after having just finished the T20 World Cup. “A year out and every match marks another opportunity to develop as a side,” Williamson said.
