India has seen a further decline in its daily Covid-19 cases as it logged 9,355 new infections, according to the Union Health Ministry’s data. The country’s active cases have also decreased from 61,013 to 57,410. The daily positivity rate has been recorded at 5.38 per cent, with a weekly positivity rate of 5.61 per cent. The total Covid case tally in India has now reached 4.49 crore.

The ministry’s data shows that the death toll has increased to 5,31,424, with 26 new deaths added to the tally. The national COVID-19 recovery rate has been recorded at 98.69 per cent, with the number of people who have recovered from the disease surging to 44,335,977. The case fatality rate was recorded at 1.18 per cent.

The ministry has also reported that 220.66 crore doses of the Covid vaccine have been administered in India so far under the nationwide vaccination drive.

However, the situation in Delhi and Maharashtra remains concerning. Delhi reported seven deaths due to Covid-19 on Wednesday, and registered a total of 1,040 fresh cases. A total of 4,915 samples were tested for Covid over the last 24 hours, while 1,320 patients recovered from the infection. With over 1,000 cases being reported in the city for the second consecutive day, the positivity rate on Wednesday stood at 21.16 per cent.

Covid-19 : Maharashtra records 784 new coronavirus infections

Meanwhile, Maharashtra recorded 784 new coronavirus infections and one fatality, bringing the state’s Covid-19 case tally to 81,63,626, and the death toll to 1,48,508. Mumbai recorded 185 cases, while the sole fatality in the state was recorded in Thane city. The state has 5,233 active cases now. As many as 1,099 patients recovered from coronavirus infection since the previous evening, taking the tally of recoveries to 80,09,885. The recovery rate in the state is 98.12 per cent.

It is noteworthy that the dominant variant of Covid-19 in Maharashtra is Omicron XBB.1.16, which has infected a total of 877 people and claimed seven lives in the state so far.

Overall, while the declining trend in Covid-19 cases is a positive sign for India, the continued surge in cases in Delhi and Maharashtra remains a cause for concern. The government continues to urge citizens to follow Covid-19 protocols and get vaccinated as soon as possible.
