April 22, 2024: In a thrilling finale to the 2024 FIDE Candidates Tournament, the chess world witnessed history in the making as 17-year-old Indian prodigy, Gukesh D, emerged as the youngest challenger for the World Chess Championship. The tournament, held in Toronto, reached its climax as Gukesh secured the sole lead after a decisive victory over Alireza Firouzja of France in the penultimate round.

Gukesh’s remarkable journey saw him enter the final round with an impressive 8.5 points, closely pursued by three formidable contenders: Russian maestro Ian Nepomniachtchi, and the top-seeded American duo of Fabiano Caruana and Hikaru Nakamura, all trailing by half a point at eight points each.

D Gukesh says his victory recipe is to stay sharp chess wise – Check out his interview below with FIDE

Gukesh: "The main thing was that I was in the right mindset throughout the event. From start to end, I was in good spirits, fully motivated, and I really wanted to win the event. All these things come together. It was helpful that I was sharp chess-wise and I managed to play some… pic.twitter.com/KJyYupF2KG

The tension was palpable as the final round commenced with four players fiercely competing for the top spot. With the championship on the line, Gukesh faced the formidable Hikaru Nakamura, knowing that even a draw would secure him at least a joint first position. The young chess sensation from Chennai rose to the occasion, displaying nerves of steel as he navigated the intense battle against Nakamura with the black pieces.

The culmination of the tournament marked one of the most suspense-filled and enthralling editions of the FIDE Candidates in history, with fans on the edge of their seats until the final move was made.

Looking ahead, Gukesh D’s historic achievement sets the stage for an eagerly anticipated clash with reigning World Chess Champion Ding Liren in the upcoming championship match scheduled later this year. Additionally, Tan Zhongyi emerged victorious in the Women’s Championship matchup, earning the right to challenge her compatriot Ju Wenjun for the prestigious title.

As the chess world celebrates the rise of new talents and the anticipation of thrilling encounters on the board, Gukesh D’s groundbreaking feat serves as a testament to the enduring allure and brilliance of the game.
