Google’s Nano Banana Turns Your Selfies into AI Portraits

October 16, 2025: Google has introduced a quirky yet powerful new feature called Nano Banana, bringing AI-generated portraits directly into the hands of Android and iOS users via Google Lens and Search. The rollout, currently live in the United States and India, marks a playful evolution in mobile image editing powered by generative AI.

At the heart of this update is the new “Create” mode, symbolized by a yellow banana icon . Users can snap a photo or select one from their gallery, then use natural language prompts like “make a photo booth pic of me” or “turn this into a vintage portrait” to transform their images. The AI responds with stylistic edits, facial expression changes, and even themed compositions, all in real time.

What sets Nano Banana apart is its conversational interface. Users can refine their portraits with follow-up prompts, making the experience feel more like chatting with a creative assistant than using a traditional editing tool. Whether you’re planning a Halloween costume or just want to see yourself in retro black-and-white, the feature offers a wide canvas for imagination.

Google has also hinted at broader global availability in the coming months, along with support for more languages. For now, the feature is available in English and is integrated into the Google app’s Lens and AI Mode.

This launch is part of Google’s broader push to embed generative AI into everyday tools, making creativity more accessible and intuitive. With millions already experimenting with AI selfies and stylized portraits, Nano Banana could become the next viral playground for digital expression.
