New Delhi, June 5, 2024 — Narendra Modi is expected to be sworn in as India’s Prime Minister for a third term on June 8, according to media reports. The new cabinet is also set to take the oath on the same day, marking the beginning of another five-year tenure for the BJP-led NDA government.
Following the announcement of the Lok Sabha poll results, the Union cabinet, chaired by PM Modi, recommended the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha on June 5, ahead of its term ending on June 16. This recommendation was made a day after the election results were declared.
Sources reported to ANI that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Janata Dal-United (JDU) have confirmed their support, facilitating the formation of the NDA government. Formal letters of support from both parties are expected to be submitted during a meeting of the alliance.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, the BJP secured 240 seats, falling short of the majority mark of 272. However, with its alliances, the NDA collectively garnered 295 seats. The opposition INDIA bloc secured 231 seats, presenting a strong challenge to the BJP-led NDA, contrary to the exit poll predictions.
This election saw the BJP’s tally reduced from its previous counts of 303 seats in 2019 and 282 seats in 2014. Meanwhile, the Congress showed significant growth, winning 99 seats compared to 52 in 2019 and 44 in 2014.
India’s New Prime Minister 2024; Will it be Modi’s 3rd Innings?
For the first time since coming to power in 2014, the BJP did not secure a majority on its own, falling 32 seats short. The NDA is scheduled to hold a strategic meeting at Prime Minister Modi’s residence today at 3:30 pm to plan future political actions.
On June 4, PM Modi expressed gratitude to the people for their mandate, emphasizing that the BJP-led NDA will form its third successive government. He highlighted the victory as a testament to the resolve for a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) and the principle of ‘Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas’ (Collective Efforts, Inclusive Growth).
“On this sacred day, it is confirmed that NDA is forming the government for the third time. We are grateful to the people; they reposed full faith in the BJP and NDA. This is the victory of the world’s largest democracy, it is a victory of strong faith in India’s Constitution, it is the victory of the resolve of Viksit Bharat. It is the victory of ‘Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas‘,” Modi stated in his address at the BJP headquarters.
