November 24, 2025: Dharmendra, one of the most beloved and enduring stars of Indian cinema, passed away today at the age of 89. Known to millions as the “He-Man” of Bollywood, his death marks the end of an era that saw him dominate the film industry for over six decades. His demise comes shortly after a brief hospital stay in Mumbai, where he had been treated for respiratory issues before being discharged.

A star whose charm transcended generations, Dharmendra’s cinematic journey began in the early 1960s, and over the years, he became a fixture in the hearts of his fans. From his rugged, larger-than-life roles to his portrayal of vulnerable, tender characters, Dharmendra carved a unique space in Hindi cinema. He was not just an actor but a symbol of masculinity, warmth, and charm, attributes that made him a beloved figure both on and off-screen.

Born on December 8, 1935, in Nasrali, Punjab, Dharmendra’s entry into the world of cinema began with a simple, yet life-changing, talent contest organized by Filmfare. Moving to Bombay with dreams of stardom, he made his debut in 1960 with the film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, but it was Phool Aur Patthar (1966) that catapulted him to national fame. His iconic bare-chested scene in the film earned him the moniker “He-Man,” a title that stuck with him for the rest of his career.

Over the years, Dharmendra’s versatility became apparent as he tackled a wide array of roles across genres. From playing the idealistic young man in Satyakam (1969) to the lovable prankster in Chupke Chupke (1975), and of course, his unforgettable role as Veeru in the cult classic Sholay (1975), Dharmendra effortlessly moved between action, romance, comedy, and drama.

“It’s the warmth, the smile, and the heart of the character that people remember,” Dharmendra once said in an interview, reflecting on his career’s longevity. In Sholay, where he starred alongside Amitabh Bachchan, he cemented his place in cinematic history as one of the most charismatic actors of his generation. “Yeh dosti hum nahi todenge,” his line in the film, remains etched in Bollywood lore.

Dharmendra’s personal life was just as celebrated as his professional one. Married to Prakash Kaur, with whom he had four children, including sons Sunny and Bobby Deol, Dharmendra’s family became an intrinsic part of his public image. His bond with actress Hema Malini, whom he married in 1980, is legendary, both on-screen and off. Their pairing in films like Rakhwala (1971), Seeta Aur Geeta (1972), and Sholay is considered one of the most iconic in Indian cinema. Together, they raised two daughters, Esha and Ahana, who also became part of Bollywood’s star-studded legacy.

Dharmendra’s influence extended beyond film. In 2004, he entered politics, representing the Bikaner constituency in India’s Parliament as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His decision to step into public service reflected his deep connection to his roots and his desire to serve the nation.

A Gentle Giant Who Stood the Test of Time

While his action-packed roles earned him the “He-Man” title, it was Dharmendra’s unique ability to blend toughness with tenderness that won him admiration. Fans fondly referred to this duality as “Naram Dharam” (gentle Dharm). His portrayal of a compassionate, emotionally-driven hero resonated with audiences, making him a multifaceted star in an era when on-screen heroes were often defined solely by their physical strength.

Through his filmography, Dharmendra contributed to both socially conscious dramas and rollicking comedies. Films like Haqeeqat (1964), Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971), and Bandini (1963) showcased his ability to delve into serious, poignant roles, while comedies like Chupke Chupke (1975) and Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973) highlighted his impeccable timing and charm.

One of his recent performances in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023) reminded audiences that Dharmendra’s star power never dulled. Playing the grandfather of Ranveer Singh’s character, Dharmendra’s portrayal was deeply moving. In an emotional scene, his character’s death on-screen brought tears to audiences, and to his own son, Bobby Deol, who later shared in interviews that he had to leave the theater unable to handle seeing his father in such a vulnerable role.

A Legacy That Lives On

Dharmendra’s contributions to Indian cinema were acknowledged with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Padma Bhushan award and a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. But it was his humility and generosity of spirit that truly set him apart in an industry often known for its egos. Even as his career slowed in the 2000s, Dharmendra remained active, making appearances on social media and cherishing the golden age of cinema.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, calling Dharmendra “a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role.” He added, “Dharmendra Ji was equally admired for his simplicity, humility, and warmth.”

Dharmendra leaves behind an incredible legacy, a body of work that spans decades, a family of stars, and millions of fans who will continue to celebrate his iconic presence in the world of film.

He is survived by his wife Hema Malini, children Sunny, Bobby, Karan, Esha, and Ahana Deol, and a nation of fans who will remember him not just as the “He-Man” but as a symbol of timeless Bollywood charm.
