Taking to his own platform, Musk expressed the implementation of these limits as a means to combat “extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation.” The restrictions were initially set at 6000 posts per day for verified accounts, 600 posts for unverified accounts, and 300 posts for new unverified accounts.

However, the situation quickly escalated throughout the day as Musk continued to tweet updates. In the afternoon, he declared that “rate limits will be increasing soon,” significantly raising the daily limits to 8000 posts for verified accounts, 800 posts for unverified accounts, and 400 posts for new unverified accounts. By the evening, Elon Musk further expanded the limits, stating, “now to 10k, 1k & 0.5k.”

To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we’ve applied the following temporary limits:

– Verified accounts are limited to reading 6000 posts/day
– Unverified accounts to 600 posts/day
– New unverified accounts to 300/day

The repercussions of this announcement were immediately felt by Twitter users, leading to an outcry across the platform. Thousands of individuals reported being unable to utilize the social media app, giving rise to hashtags like “TwitterDown” and “RateLimitExceeded.”

The disruption commenced around 8 a.m. EST on Saturday and persisted throughout the afternoon, according to DownDetector. At its peak around 1 p.m., there were over 7,000 outage reports concerning the website.

Numerous users encountered difficulties such as the inability to retrieve tweets or the frustrating error message stating, “Sorry, you are rate limited. Please wait a few moments then try again.” In a desperate attempt for resolution, many users directly reached out to Elon Musk, expressing their grievances with messages like, “Hey Elon, my Twitter isn’t working” and “A limit on reading tweets?”

This incident marked another significant service disruption for Twitter users, following a similar outage in March. With over 8,000 users reporting disruptions, it stood as one of the largest incidents since Elon Musk assumed ownership of the platform.

As the Twitter community grapples with the aftermath of these limitations, the debate over the extent of moderation and user experience on the platform intensifies. The latest restrictions have sparked questions about the balance between safeguarding against abuse and preserving the open nature of Twitter. Only time will tell how this development will shape the future of the social media giant under Elon Musk’s leadership.
