Vatican City, April 23, 2025 — The body of Pope Francis was solemnly moved to St. Peter’s Basilica this Wednesday morning, marking the beginning of public tributes to the late pontiff before his state funeral on Saturday, April 26. The 88-year-old spiritual leader passed away on Monday following complications from a stroke, shortly after recovering from a severe bout of double pneumonia.
Thousands of mourners are expected to gather in Rome over the coming days to pay their respects. Among them will be numerous international dignitaries, including U.S. President Donald Trump, who will join other global leaders in honoring the legacy of the first Latin American Pope.
The official funeral Mass is set for 10:00 am local time (1:30 pm IST) on Saturday, April 26. The date was chosen during the cardinals’ general congregation—an early step in the process that will soon lead to the election of a new Pope within the next three weeks.
This morning’s “Rite of Translation” was presided over by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church. The liturgical ceremony began with prayers in the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta, where Pope Francis had lived throughout his papacy.

In a heartfelt prayer, Cardinal Farrell expressed gratitude for the late pontiff’s 12-year leadership and asked for eternal peace for the beloved Pope. The solemn procession then made its way through Santa Marta Square, passed beneath the Arch of the Bells, and arrived at St. Peter’s Basilica—where the faithful will be able to view the late Pope’s remains.
The Vatican is now preparing for a historic farewell to Pope Francis that promises to bring the world together in mourning and reflection.
