Fujifilm Reveals 14 Wild Lens Concepts and Asks Fans to Choose

Friday, March 6, 2026: In a move that feels more like a late-night lab visit than a corporate press conference, Fujifilm has launched an online event titled “Focus on Glass – Untold Stories.” Coming right on the heels of CP+ 2026, the company bypassed the usual hype of a product launch to host a candid, subtitled conversation about the soul of optics.

Rather than just chasing megapixels, Fujifilm’s product planners spent the session discussing the “character” of glass, flares, tactile feedback, and the specific ways light hits the sensor. The highlight? A reveal of 14 lens concepts that could define the next decade of the X Mount, provided the community votes for them.

Pushing the Limits of Light

The most ambitious ideas sit in the “Wide Aperture” category. Fujifilm is gauging interest in an XF 33mm f/1, a standard prime that would push the limits of what’s possible for APS-C. Even more daring is an XF 18-50mm f/1.4 zoom. While heavy (estimated at 800g), it would be the first of its kind, offering prime-level brightness across a standard zoom range. Currently, a fast XF 16-80mm f/2.8 is leading the community polls, suggesting users are hungry for a constant-aperture workhorse.

Fujifilm Focus on Glass: Character Matters More Than Resolution

Perhaps the most interesting takeaway for filmmakers is Fujifilm’s admission that “perfect” isn’t always better. Citing the legendary status of the original XF 35mm f/1.4, which struggles to resolve 40MP sensors but remains a fan favorite for its rendering, the team introduced several “character-rich” concepts:

Cine Primes and f/1.4 Zooms: Fujifilm’s Vision for X Mount’s Future

  • Ghost Control 16-50mm: A lens designed to bloom with flares and “ghosts” when the hood is removed, turning optical imperfections into a creative choice.
  • T1.2 Cine Primes: A dedicated set (16mm, 23mm, 33mm, 56mm) built specifically for cinema workflows, reflecting planner Yuma Miyauchi’s own background as a music video director.
  • Porous Aperture Soft Focus: A niche tool that uses a multi-hole aperture design for a hazy, dream-like aesthetic.

Nostalgia and Brass

For the purists, Fujifilm is looking at its history. They teased a potential “Travel Mini” dual-focal length lens (switching between 18mm and 30mm) and a trio of f/2 primes encased in solid brass. These concepts prioritize the physical experience of photography, the weight, the cold metal, and the way a lens ages over time.

The Decision is Yours

Fujifilm was careful to state that none of these 14 lenses are in active development yet. This is a massive market research experiment. They have opened a voting portal on their website, asking the X-series community to pick their top three favorites.

If you’ve ever complained that modern lenses are “too clinical” or that the X Mount needs a specific cine prime, this is likely your best shot at influencing the engineers in Tokyo.
