Gmail Users Tricked by Fake Calls in Rising Scam Trend

August 26, 2025 | New Delhi : A new wave of cybercrime is exploiting the most human element of digital life, trust. Gmail users are being targeted not just by emails, but by carefully timed phone calls that impersonate Google support, leaving even tech-savvy individuals at risk.

These coordinated attacks go beyond traditional phishing. Instead of just clicking a suspicious link, victims are led into a conversation, often by someone sounding authoritative and helpful, then followed up with a convincing email that appears to be from Google itself.

The attackers bank on the fact that Gmail is central to most people’s online lives, from banking and shopping to cloud storage. By tapping into this dependency, scammers are able to gain full access to users’ accounts through manipulative conversations.

The scam unfolds in stages:

  1. A user receives an alarming email saying their Google Mail account is compromised.
  2. Shortly after, a phone call comes in, often using spoofed numbers and AI-generated voices, pretending to be from Google.
  3. The caller offers “help,” asking for verification, or even sharing a link to reset the password.
  4. Once the user complies, the attacker gains control.

This blend of voice phishing (vishing) and follow-up emails blurs the lines between reality and manipulation, making it harder for users to detect the fraud.

Why Gmail?

With over 2 billion users, Gmail remains a cornerstone of digital identity. Cybersecurity experts say these new schemes aim for volume and simplicity, a single compromised Gmail account can lead to access to cloud files, bank notifications, social media profiles, and even recovery keys for other platforms.

What You Can Do

Google and security professionals recommend the following to reduce risk:

  • Avoid clicking links or downloading attachments from unsolicited emails.
  • Be skeptical of calls claiming to be from Google or any tech provider.
  • Use two-factor authentication or passkeys for account security.
  • Regularly update passwords and review account activity logs.

Human-Centric Attacks On The Rise

Unlike traditional scams that rely solely on tech exploits, this trend focuses on psychological manipulation, making everyday users the weakest link. It’s not just about digital vulnerability, it is about emotional response under pressure.

Experts warn that these types of attacks could soon spread beyond Google Mail, especially as AI-powered voice and email impersonation tools become more accessible.
