October 16, 2025: India is gearing up to host the prestigious Commonwealth Games (CWG 2030) for the second time in 2030, with Ahmedabad set to be the venue for the centenary edition of the event. The announcement follows the evaluation committee’s recommendation, which is subject to final approval by the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly during its meeting in Glasgow on November 26. If approved, Ahmedabad will become the second Indian city to host the Games, after Delhi in 2010.

On Wednesday, the Commonwealth Sport Executive Board officially recommended Ahmedabad, Gujarat’s largest city, as the “proposed host” for the 2030 Games. The final decision will be made during the General Assembly in Glasgow, which is slated for later this month. The announcement marks a significant milestone for both India and Commonwealth Sport, with Ahmedabad poised to take center stage for the landmark centenary edition.

CWG 2030: Amdavad Set to Host Centenary Commonwealth Games

A day of immense joy and pride for India.

Heartiest congratulations to every citizen of India on Commonwealth Association's approval of India's bid to host the Commonwealth Games 2030 in Ahmedabad. It is a grand endorsement of PM Shri @narendramodi Ji's relentless efforts to…

“The recommendation is a crucial step in the future of the Commonwealth Sport movement,” said Katie Sadleir, CEO of Commonwealth Sport. “It builds on the momentum that Glasgow 2026 will provide and sets a clear direction for the years ahead,” she added, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming Games in shaping the movement’s future.

For India, the CWG 2030 represents a moment of pride and potential. Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his enthusiasm, calling the recommendation “a day of immense joy and pride for India.” Shah also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his contributions to elevating India’s sports infrastructure, describing the country as a “marvel of a sports destination.”

The 2030 Games will mark the centenary of the inaugural event held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930

The 2030 edition of the Games will be a celebration of 100 years of the Commonwealth Games, an event that dates back to 1930. As part of the Games’ evolution, Commonwealth Sport sees the 2030 edition as an opportunity to not only honor its rich history but also to demonstrate how the Games can continue to impact athletes, communities, and nations across the Commonwealth.

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President P.T. Usha also weighed in, calling the Games an opportunity to showcase India’s world-class sporting infrastructure and event capabilities. She emphasized the Games’ role in India’s broader national aspirations, particularly in the lead-up to India’s “Viksit Bharat 2047” vision.

“The CWG 2030 Games will inspire the youth, strengthen international partnerships, and contribute to a shared future across the Commonwealth,” Usha said, underlining the positive long-term impact the Games will have on India’s sporting landscape.

Ahmedabad faced stiff competition from Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, with both cities vying for the right to host the event. Despite this, the Commonwealth Games has faced difficulties in securing host cities in recent years. The 2022 edition of the Games, initially scheduled to take place in Durban, South Africa, was moved to Birmingham after financial constraints forced Durban to pull out. The 2030 CWG has therefore garnered significant attention, as both the event and India’s sporting future hang in the balance.

The Commonwealth Games are seen as an important event for India, not only in terms of sporting prestige but also as part of its bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics. India aims to leverage the global attention the CWG 2030 will bring to showcase its ability to host major international sporting events. An IOA official stated that the 2030 Games will serve as a platform to demonstrate India’s growth as a “reliable destination” for world-class sporting events.

“Ahead of the CWG 2030, we aim to build world-class infrastructure and facilities in a timely, transparent, and efficient manner,” the official said. “The Games will show the world that India is more mature, ambitious, and capable than it was 15 years ago.”

Ahmedabad is also set to compete with Doha, Qatar, in the race for the 2036 Olympics. Doha will host the 2030 Asian Games, giving both cities a chance to showcase their capabilities on the global stage.

The Commonwealth Games 2030 bid is part of India’s broader strategy to gain experience in hosting major international events. Along with the 2030 CWG, India is preparing to host the 2027 Women’s Volleyball World Championship and the 2028 World U20 Athletics Championships. India’s investment in sporting infrastructure is already showing results, with Ahmedabad recently hosting the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship and the Asian Swimming Championship at the newly-inaugurated Naranpura Sports Complex.

India’s journey toward becoming a global sporting hub has taken major steps forward, and hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2030 will further solidify the country’s position as a top-tier destination for international sports.
