Who is Vikramjit Singh?
As his name implies, 19-year-old Vikramjit has strong ties to his ancestral home of India, where his forebears lived. The connection is actually so deep that Vikramjit’s family has never been able to loose it.
Vikramjit’s family migrated to the Netherlands when his grandpa Khushi Cheema made the decision to secure the safety of his family following the increase of insurgency in Punjab during the mid-1980s. Vikramjit is the son of Harpreet Singh, who owns a transportation business in Amstelveen.

Khushi Cheema, a native of Cheema Khurd near Jalandhar, immigrated to the new nation by operating a taxi business, which eventually grew into his own business.
Harpreet, Khushi’s son and Vikramjit’s father, noted that Khushi and his family’s first few weeks in a foreign nation were not without difficulty.
“I was five when I came to the Netherlands. It was very hard; you didn’t know the language, it was a completely different culture. It took me a few years to settle down,” said Harpreet in a telephonic conversation from Amstelveen with a leadning newspaper.
Vikramjeet, Harpreet’s son, was born in Cheema Khurd, just like his father, despite living in the Netherlands. He didn’t go overseas till he was seven years old.
Vikramjit’s cricket career began when he was discovered by the then-Dutch captain Peter Borren during a 12-and-under competition. Vikramjit made his senior squad debut two years after making his Dutch ‘A’ side debut at the age of 15.
Taruwar Kohli, a former under-19 cricketer who has played club cricket in Amsterdam, oversaw the young batsman’s initial training. He was also able to spend more time with his grandfather, who lived nearby in their village of Khurd Cheema, after he transferred to Taruwar’s academy.
When the two teams square off at the SCG on Thursday, Vikramjit is hoping that his grandfather, an Indian sports aficionado, will back his Dutch team rather than his native nation.
