International Girl Child Day 2022: Let's reaffirm our support to protect their rights and freedom

The International Girl Child Day 2022 is observed is celebrated today (on October 11) with the goal of empowering girls and amplifying their voice globally. Events are organised by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to highlight the strength and potential of girls.

This year’s International Day of the Girl Child theme, chosen by UNICEF, is “Our Time Is Now – Our Rights, Our Future.” The International Day of the Girl will also celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2022. The fact that things have gotten a little better for females over the past ten years as more focus is placed on problems that are important to them is encouraging.

The day also emphasises how crucial it is to provide females with equal chances and level playing fields so that they may perform on par with, if not better than, boys.

On this day, the UN, other organisations, advocacy groups, and people all across the world reaffirm their opposition to violence, child marriage, rape, poor health, and obstacles to girls’ education.

The United Nations General Assembly on December 19, 2011 adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child. Since then, every year, the day is celebrated to recognise girls’ rights and the unique challenges they face all over the world.

The International Day of the Girl Child focuses on the need to focus on issues that hinder a girl child’s growth and promote girls’ empowerment and human rights.

Girls with disabilities are twice as likely to experience gender-based violence.

Despite the advancements made over the previous ten years, there has been little investment in girls’ rights, and obstacles that limit their potential continue to exist for them. Crisis situations like COVID-19, the climate change, and humanitarian wars have exacerbated these problems.

To put it briefly, girls are prepared for their time in the sun. The second half of the population should be supported and believed in for their leadership, skills, and potential. Some people even argue that they are better than the first half.
