October 2, 2026: India produced a gritty defensive display to beat defending champions China 1-0 in the women’s hockey final and win Asian Games gold, while also securing a place at the LA 2028 Olympics.
Lalremsiami scored the decisive goal in the 10th minute, smashing a powerful reverse hit into the roof of the net after Salima Tete and Sakshi combined to carve open the Chinese defence.
China had chances to level the contest, but India refused to buckle.
The biggest moment came late in the first half when China were awarded a penalty stroke after Sushila was penalised for a push from behind. Zhang Ying stepped up, but India captain and goalkeeper Savita Punia guessed correctly and produced a superb one-handed save to her left.
Savita was called into action again moments later, racing off her line to shut down another Chinese attack as India scrambled to clear the danger.
India had opportunities to extend their lead, including a penalty corner and a powerful effort from Navneet that flew narrowly wide in the 13th minute. But with China piling on the pressure in the closing stages, the Indian defence had to dig deep.
They did just that. China threw everything forward in the final minutes, but India held their shape, defended every attack and saw out the match to claim the gold medal.
The victory also ended a long wait for India, marking their first Asian Games win over China since 1982.
