October 14, 2025: Google has unveiled plans to establish its first artificial intelligence (AI) hub in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh. The massive initiative, revealed by Google CEO Sundar Pichai on X (formerly Twitter), represents the company’s largest investment in India to date, an estimated $15 billion USD over five years (2026–2030).

The Google AI hub will combine gigawatt-scale compute power, a new international subsea cable gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure, placing Visakhapatnam at the center of India’s digital transformation. According to Pichai, this will help “accelerate AI innovation and drive growth across the country.”

“Great to speak with India PM @narendramodi and @OfficialINDIAai to share our plans for the first-ever Google AI hub in Visakhapatnam, a landmark development,” Pichai posted.

  • Advanced Fiber-Optic and Cloud Infrastructure to support businesses and developers across India

Sundar Pichai Unveils Google’s First AI Hub in India

The hub is designed to support Google’s full AI stack in India, enabling scalable development and deployment of AI-driven services. An independent study by Access Partnership, commissioned by Google, estimates that this project will generate $15 billion in U.S. GDP due to increased cloud and AI activity involving American talent and resources.

But the economic ripple effect won’t stop there. With India’s tech industry on a steep growth trajectory, the hub is expected to fuel job creation, boost AI capabilities, and support startups, enterprises, and government digital initiatives.

The project aligns with the Indian government’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, which aims to transform India into a developed nation through digital empowerment and inclusive economic growth.

The announcement was made at the Bharat AI Shakti event in New Delhi, a precursor to the India-AI Impact Summit 2026. The event was attended by top leaders, including: Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Electronics & IT , Smt Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of Finance, Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Shri Nara Lokesh, Minister for IT, Andhra Pradesh and Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud

CM N. Chandrababu Naidu remarked, “This significant investment marks a new chapter in India’s digital journey. We are proud to host the first gigawatt-scale data center and Google’s first AI hub in India.”

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, added, “This is a landmark investment in India’s digital future. It demonstrates our long-term commitment to inclusive growth, innovation, and AI development, not just for India, but the world.”

Strategically located on India’s eastern coast, Vizag will become a critical digital gateway to Southeast Asia and beyond. Google’s new subsea cables landing in the region will offer:

  • New low-latency, high-speed routes
  • Redundancy for India’s digital infrastructure, currently concentrated around Mumbai and Chennai
  • Enhanced user experiences for cloud, AI, and internet services
  • Broader AI accessibility for Indian businesses, startups, and government services

The Vizag Google AI hub cements India’s position as a global AI innovation leader. It reflects growing collaboration between Indian and American tech ecosystems and emphasizes responsible AI development, digital inclusion, and sustainability.

With this move, Google is not just investing in infrastructure, it’s investing in the future of AI in India, positioning the country as a central player in the next wave of global tech transformation.
