October 30, 2024: AM Green has awarded John Cockerill Hydrogen to supply the country’s largest electrolyzer order for its ambitious green ammonia facility in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. Set to become one of the world’s largest green ammonia projects, AM Green’s initiative marks a significant step in the global shift toward renewable energy and sustainable production.
Following its Final Investment Decision (FID) in August 2024, AM Green has committed to developing a green ammonia plant capable of producing one million tons annually, with 1.3 GW of electrolyzers to be installed in two 640 MW phases. John Cockerill will provide advanced pressurized alkaline electrolyzers, capable of 24-hour green hydrogen production using renewable energy sources like wind and solar, supplemented by pumped hydro storage for cost efficiency.
Key Milestone for India’s Green Hydrogen Ambitions
This initial 640 MW phase marks a significant leap toward realizing India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission goals. As part of an ongoing strategic partnership, John Cockerill and AM Green are working to establish India’s largest electrolyzer manufacturing facility, aiming to produce up to 2 GW per year. This facility will not only support AM Green’s future projects but also contribute to the country’s hydrogen ecosystem, positioning India as a key global exporter of low-cost green hydrogen.
AM Green Expanding Renewable Capacity for Global Decarbonization Goals
The Kakinada plant’s certification under CertifHy and EU RFNBO guidelines underscores its alignment with stringent renewable standards, strengthening its global market appeal. Additionally, AM Green has already secured significant offtake agreements for green hydrogen applications in industries such as refining, shipping, and power generation, reinforcing India’s commitment to sustainable exports.
AM Green’s Chairman, Anil Chalamalasetty, highlighted the collaboration’s broader implications: “This partnership with John Cockerill positions India as a leader in producing affordable green hydrogen that meets international standards. Together, we are not only contributing to India’s green hydrogen goals but also helping decarbonize industries worldwide.”
Pioneering Green Hydrogen Solutions with Advanced Technology
John Cockerill’s CEO, François Michel, affirmed the company’s dedication to facilitating large-scale green hydrogen production through innovative technology: “This project demonstrates our electrolysis technology’s ability to drive mass adoption of green hydrogen, helping to meet ambitious sustainability targets. We are proud to contribute to India’s vision for a cleaner, greener future.”
In line with this initiative, John Cockerill’s joint venture with Technip Energies, Rely, will provide engineering, procurement, construction management, and commissioning services for the Kakinada facility. The project has garnered substantial support from both Indian and international partners, including Credendo’s Green Package, further strengthening the facility’s sustainability credentials.
