Aryna Sabalenka successfully defended her Australian Open title, defeating Qinwen Zheng in the women’s singles final with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. The No. 2-seeded Sabalenka broke Zheng’s serve in the second game and took the first set in just 33 minutes. She continued her dominance in the second set, breaking Zheng twice to secure the win.
Aryna strong first serve and pressure tactics proved to be the deciding factors in the match. She broke Zheng’s opening serve in the second set to take a 1-0 game lead, and the Chinese star had more double faults in the following games, which helped Sabalenka mount more pressure. Aryna held her serves, giving little chance of a comeback to Zheng.
Though Zheng managed to save 3 championship points, it was Sabalenka’s grit that got her a well deserved victory. The winner remained unbeaten in the Aus Open 2024 without loosing a single set throughout the tournament.
Sabalenka Secures Back-to-Back Australian Open Title
The 25-year-old Sabalenka improved to two wins in three Grand Slam finals, all in a span of 13 months. She is the first woman since Victoria Azarenka in 2012 and 2013 to win back-to-back Australian Open titles. Zheng, the No. 12-seeded player, made her debut in a major final and faced an opponent ranked in the top.
Aryna victory marks a significant milestone in her career, as she becomes only the second Belarusian player after Victoria Azarenka to win back-to-back Australian Open titles[1]. With this feat, Aryna has joined an elite club of tennis stars like Monica Seles and Steffi Graf.
