In a momentous lift-off witnessed at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) soared into 2024 by successfully launching the X-Ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat) aboard the PSLV-C58 rocket. The launch, a testament to India’s prowess in space exploration, heralds a new era of scientific discovery in celestial measurements.

The early morning spectacle marked a flawless liftoff as the PSLV-C58 vehicle propelled the XPoSat satellite into its intended orbit, precisely positioning it at 650 km with a 6-degree inclination. The successful launch, as confirmed by ISRO, initiated a significant phase for space research, setting the stage for an ambitious endeavor.

A Trailblazing Mission: XPoSat’s Scientific Purpose

XPoSat, the primary scientific satellite designed by ISRO, is dedicated to conducting space-based polarization measurements of X-ray emissions from celestial sources. The satellite boasts a modified configuration derived from the IMS-2 bus platform, leveraging the heritage of previous IRS satellites.

Equipped with two cutting-edge payloads, POLIX (Polarimeter Instrument in X-rays) and XSPECT (X-ray Spectroscopy and Timing), developed by esteemed institutions like the Raman Research Institute and URSC’s Space Astronomy Group, XPoSat aims to achieve multiple research objectives.

The mission’s primary goals encompass measuring X-ray polarization within the 8-30keV energy band via POLIX, carrying out extensive spectral and temporal studies of cosmic X-ray sources within the 0.8-15keV band through XSPECT, and conducting polarisation and spectroscopic measurements of X-ray emissions in a common energy band.

Future Endeavors and Mission Objectives

Following the satellite’s injection, ISRO plans to reduce the orbit into a 350 km circular orbit to facilitate 3-axis stabilized mode for Orbital Platform (OP) experiments. The PSLV Orbital Experimental Module-3 (POEM-3) experiment aims to fulfill objectives by executing ten identified payloads provided by ISRO and IN-SPACe.

The successful launch of XPoSat not only signifies a remarkable achievement for ISRO but also paves the way for cutting-edge advancements in space-based research, offering unprecedented insights into cosmic phenomena.

As India’s journey into the depths of space begins anew, the successful deployment of XPoSat stands as a testament to ISRO’s commitment to pioneering scientific exploration and contributing significantly to the global understanding of celestial phenomena.
