July 19, 2024: n a significant stride towards advancing quantum optics capabilities in India, nexAtom Research and Instruments, a spinoff of the renowned Raman Research Institute (RRI), has announced the launch of affordable laser systems tailored for quantum optics applications.

The initiative marks a breakthrough in the field, addressing the longstanding challenge of high costs associated with precision laser systems crucial for quantum research and industrial applications. Developed under a license from RRI, which holds a provisional Indian patent for their ‘Standalone laser system with frequency tunability and precision control’, these laser platforms promise to democratize access to advanced technology in quantum optics.

RRI, known for its pioneering work in precision laser systems essential for quantum-enabled technologies, aims to support India’s ambitious National Quantum Mission (NQM). Launched with a budget of Rs. 6,000 crore, the mission seeks to establish a robust ecosystem for quantum technology solutions across various sectors.

The newly introduced tunable lasers, branded as External Cavity Diode Lasers (ECDL), are designed to offer precise spectroscopic capabilities for quantum systems research and technology labs. These systems are expected to play a crucial role in advancing fields such as quantum communication, quantum technology applications, and metrology, aligning with the core objectives of the Department of Science & Technology-led NQM.

nexAtom initiated development of its tunable laser technology in 2017, leveraging advancements in digital control electronics to enhance functionality and versatility. According to Subodh Vashist, Founder and System Design Expert at nexAtom, “Our laser systems can be customized to meet diverse user needs across medical, remote sensing, geo-mapping, space exploration, and marine navigation sectors. By eliminating the need for additional auxiliary systems, we ensure cost-effectiveness without compromising on performance.”

Advancing Quantum Optics: nexAtom’s Affordable Laser Systems in India

Professor Sadiq Rangwala, Principal Technical Advisor to nexAtom and a key figure in RRI’s Light and Matter group, emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative for India’s scientific entrepreneurship landscape. “This collaboration underscores our commitment to fostering a conducive environment for quantum innovations, crucial for the successful implementation of the National Quantum Mission,” noted Prof. Rangwala.

Leveraging RRI’s Quantum Interactions (QuaInt) lab’s two-decade-long expertise, nexAtom aims to deliver high-quality, affordable solutions beyond academia, catering to industrial and research demands. “Our multidisciplinary approach in quantum system interactions has enabled the development of a range of products that enhance research capabilities in quantum physics,” added Prof. Rangwala.

In addition to precision tunable laser systems, nexAtom’s product portfolio includes precision time taggers for quantum applications, ultra-fast seed fiber lasers for pulsed laser applications, and Q-switched fiber and diode lasers crucial for applications like metal 3D printing.

As India gears up to capitalize on the National Quantum Mission’s potential, the demand for customizable laser systems and associated instruments is expected to surge. This development highlights the critical need for skilled professionals capable of driving indigenous quantum technology solutions, underscoring the pivotal role of education and training in sustaining India’s quantum leap.
